EcoTrans' primary products, our auxiliary power units (APUs), are designed to help reduce locomotive diesel fuel consumption and help meet United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 0 limits for nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Fuel prices continue to rise, and they eat up a large part of your operating budget. By installing the K9® Locomotive Auxiliary Power Unit you can significantly reduce your fuel budget. The K9® can cut your winter idle time fuel bill by 80 percent or more and help to get your locomotive EPA compliant in one step. The K9® Locomotive Auxiliary Power Unit can shut down your main engine at idle. You can save fuel and reduce harmful emissions by as much as 98 percent (versus running locomotive without APU at idle). The Auxiliary Power Unit can give you standard 120/240 VAC auxiliary power for everything from air conditioners to air compressors. Trust the brand developed for the railroad by the railroad to protect your locomotive! By installing the K9® Locomotive Auxiliary Power Unit kit you're installing a sentinel system to stand guard over vital main engine operations. It keeps oil and water warm while the main engine is at idle, and provides auxiliary power for conventional 120/240 VAC applications. Fuel SavingsBy installing the K9® Locomotive Auxiliary Power Unit, you can significantly reduce your fuel budget. The K9® can cut your winter idle time fuel bill by 80 percent or more and help to get your locomotive EPA compliant in one step.TechnologyK9® APU Technical Information
EPA CompianceIn 1998, under the Federal Clean Air Act, EPA promulgated exhaust emission standards for locomotive diesel engines. The primary focus of this rule is the reduction of oxides of nitrogen, (NOx), but all emission constituents have limits. All existing Line Haul locomotives built from 1973 through 2001, at the time of remanufacturing must be made compliant with Tier 0 emission standards, (9.5 gms NOx). All new Line Haul locomotives built from 2002 through 2004 must meet Tier 1 limits, (7.4 gms NOx) and all new Line Haul units built in 2005 and after must meet Tier 2, (5.5 gms NOx). The complete locomotive rule and all Tier limits for both Line Haul and Switcher locomotives can be found at www.epa.gov/otaq/locomotives.htm. IMPCO EcoTrans answers the call with the K9® locomotive Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). The APU is a part of a locomotive Tier 0 package certified to meet EPA's 1997 locomotive rule and conform with the EPA's idle reduction strategy. This assists in bringing the locomotive into compliance without the significant fuel penalty associated with other emission reduction kits. The K9® system can also be used as the foundation for other locomotive system building blocks, such as air conditioning, 120/240VDC, battery saver and cab accessories.
